Friday 22nd October- Sunday 7th (or Tuesday 9th) November 2004

Join us on our third rail tour of China. It could be your last chance to see “real” Chinese steam in action. The tour combines the best of China. The Great Wall, Terracotta Army at Xian, a three day Yangtze River Cruise and sightseeing in Beijing with its best steam action. From local railways with bustling steam trains to the best steam express in the world. You will enjoy depot visits and linesiding on the famous Jing Peng Pass where you will savour long heavy trains double headed by pairs of QJ’s working very hard.
Steam is on the way out now in China; join us now before its too late!

Friday 22 October - fly to Beijing
British Airways flight from Heathrow to Beijing non stop.

Saturday23 October - Tianamen Square and The Forbidden City
Arrive Beijing. Transfer to our five star hotel. In the afternoon visit Tianamen Square and The Forbidden City. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a five star hotel.

Sunday 24 October - the Nanpiao Mining Railway
On arrival at Jinzhou we enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant. This will be followed by a day on the Nanpiao Mining Railway. The busy steam operated railway uses steam on three lines our of Xiamiaozi, all of which have a passenger train service using SY Class. As well as line siding there will be the opportunity to ride the steam passenger trains. This is a new discovery with steep gradients and a mountain back drop. Dinner and overnight accommodation Jinzhou.

Monday 25 October - to Shenyang
We transfer by coach to Shenyang where we have arranged a special lunch and a sightseeing tour of the city. Afterwrds we continue by coach to Teifa. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Hotel Teifa.

Tuesday 26 October - Teifa linesiding
After breakfast transfer by coach to Teifa. See this busy steam system or ride the many steam passenger working on the four lines that radiate from Teifa. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Hotel Teifa.

Wednesday 27 October - long distance QJ steam passenger train
Transfer by coach to Tongliano visiting Zhelimu depot (QJ Class) on the way. On arrival at Tongliano Bei Station where we join our private coach attached to the last regular long distance steam passenger train in the world. Our train will be hauled by several different QJ Class 2-10-2 steam locomotives over the 420 kms of spectacular railway to Reshui. Here we leave our train for dinner and overnight accommodation at the Reshui Hotel for four nights.

Thursday 28 October - linesiding on the Jitong Railway
Full day linesiding on the Jitong Railway at Jingpeng and Reshui. The steam action on this line is by far the best in the world. Dinner and overnight accommodation Reshui.

Friday 29 October - a trip over the pass by freight train
After breakfast transfer by coach to Daban. On arrival we transfer to our special carriage which is marshalled inside a freight train for a spectacular journey over the Jinpeng Pass to Jinpeng Station. This is a very priviledged position from which to enjoy the greatest steam show on earth. On arrival at Jinpeng ou carriage will be detatched and added to an eastbound freight train for the lourney back to Daban.Dinner and overnight accommodation Reshui.

Saturday 30 October - linesiding on the Jitong Railway
Another full day linesiding on the Jitong Railway at Jingpeng and Reshui. With an optional visit to local tribes market instead of linesiding. Dinner and overnight accommodation Reshui.

Sunday 31 October - busy Daban steam loco depot
This morning we visit the busy steam depot at Daban home to many QJ Class 2-10-2’s. You will be able to soak up the nostalgia at this working main line steam depot. Transfer to Chifeng for the overnight train to Beijing soft class sleepers.

Monday 1 Nov Temple of Heaven and the new Bejing Railway Museum
After breakfast in Bejing restaurant we visit the Temple of Heaven and the new railway museum Early afternoon flight to Xian. Dinner and overnight accommodation in a 5 star Xian Hotel.

Tuesday 2 November - Tongchuan Coal Railway
After breakfast we transfer by coach to the Tongchuan Coal Railway, the last system in China to be regularly worked by JF Class Mikados. We visit the depot. Enjoy a little line siding and ride the working steam hauled passenger train. Dinner and overnight accom in five star hotel in Xian

Wednesday 3 November - Terracotta Army
Visit the Terracotta Army. Dinner in Xian. Overnight accommodation in a five star hotel in Xian.

Thursday 4 November - Yangtze Gorges Cruise
Late afternoon flight to Chongquing. On arrival we transfer to our luxury class 1 boat for a three day Yangtze Gorges Cruise (full board). The Yangtze is lined with evocatively named rocks and hills. The first of the three gorges we pass through is Qutangxia (Bellows Gorge). The three days on the cruise include all the meals.

Friday 5 November ‘Witches’ and Xilim Gorges
Today we pass through Wuxia (Witches Gorge), lined with 12 peaks and Xilim Gorge, which is made up of 7 smaller gorges.

Saturday 6 November – fly to Beijing
We end our voyage of the Yangtze at Yicheng in the early afternoon. Here we have arranged a town tour with some free time before we transfer to the airport for our flight to Beijing. On arrival at Beijing we transfer to our 5 star hotel. Dinner in Bejing

Sunday 7 November – fly to Heathrow or Great Wall of China; the Summer Palace
After breakfast transfer to the airport for our direct British Airways flights to London Heathrow, where we arrive mid afternoon.

Or you can stay on for two extra nights (supplement £55 per person) and Visit the Great Wall of China in the morning. In the afternoon we take lunch in a good Beijing restaurant. Afternoon visit to the steam worked narrow gauge mineral railway, close to Beijing.

Monday 8 November – Free day in Beijing

Tuesday 9 November – Fly to Heathrow
After breakfast transfer to the airport for our direct British Airways flights to London Heathrow, where we arrive mid afternoon.
